Frequently Asked Questions
Of course not all of these questions are frequently asked, but I figured I would add extra in case someone was wondering. Also, this is in no way written in a technical manner so to the advanced or experienced users out there, don't get all huffy puffy if you think I'm talking dumb to you. ;)
Q: Do I need an account to use ePirate?
A: Absolutely not. You can browse and download from the main site (aka download center) and the forums without logging in.
Q: Why should I register?
A: You don't have to, but you must register if you want to submit downloads or post comments.
Q: If I register will I get spam?
A: No, we will never sell or share your email address or any other personal information with anyone.
Q: How do I register?
A: Simply click the "create new account" link on the left-hand side.
Q: Why can't I login to the forums after registering?
A: The forums and the site do not have integrated user databases, so you need two separate accounts.
Q: How do I download?
A: Simply click on a download title and scroll down and click any link (opens in new window for convenience).
Q: What if the link is not clickable?
A: Some links are not clickable, these you must copy and paste into your web-browser or you could use a nice FireFox plugin called "FlashGet". This works wonders in conjunction with Orbit Download Manager, for RapidShare.com premium users.
Q: When I download a file I get a html (.htm) file?
A: Some of our downloads link throught anonym.to to block referral. This prevents links from being deleted faster, and software vendors from knowing we are leeching ;). If you got a .htm file it's because you right-clicked and chose "save as" (in which case you saved the anonym.to page), you cannot do this with the links, you can only left-click.
Q: I want to download a file but I don't have RapidShare premium!
A: Almost every download link has two different mirrors you can choose from, so if you maxed your RS free-user access for the hour, download from the alternative host.
Q: Why do you have so many RapidShare links?
A: Because RapidShare has the most premium members and for them it is more convenient to download from RapidShare than from other hosts. Free users can download off other mirrors we provide.
Q: I want something you don't have, can I request it?
A: Sure, you can do this by clicking the "Contact Us" tab at the top of the site.
Q: How do I report dead/broken links?
A: Click the "report this page" link towards the bottom of the download page, but above the comments and submit the following form.
Q: If I report a dead/broken link will it be replaced?
A: 90% of the time, yes. If we don't have a backup or can't find a replacement link, we will just delete it.
Q: How do I add a download?
A: you can submit downloads when you are logged in by clicking "submit warez" on the navigation menu.
Q: I submitted a download but it hasn't shown yet!
A: Downloads submitted by non-staff members go into the database but are not approved until they are reviewed. This prevents spam, offensive content and viruses from spreading.
Q: Basic requirements!
A: To use most of this stuff it's a good idea to have WinRAR, an ISO manager, DAMN NFO Viewer, Windows OS, a torrent client and a basic understanding of how Windows is set up (like where program files are located). There are no real software requirements, as it varies, but you MUST have a RAR-handling app (like WinRAR or 7-zip) for 95% of the downloads.
Q: What is a NFO file?
A: An NFO is a small document-like file that is standard for scene releases and includes information about the software, how to use the crack etc. The release groups or "cracking" groups use these almost exclusively. Generally it's not needed on ePirate, because most instructions come in notepad. It's not a bad idea to have DAMN NFO Viewer though, so you can read the NFO files.
Q: What is a ZIP file?
A: ZIP is a compression format. It is used to reduce the file size of the downloads (thereby saving time and bandwidth). When something is compressed it is at the same time output into a single file or alternatively as split files, this once again eases the task of downloading (imagine downloading a folder with a 100 files, every time having click the individual file). Standard Windows 2K, XP and Vista natively support ZIP files, which is why this format is preferred by many.
Q: What is a RAR file?
A: A RAR file is similar to a ZIP file but has a better compression ratio and is the standard archive format for distributing Warez. Most of the files on ePirate are in this format. You will need WinRAR or 7-ZIP to use these files.
Q: How do I unRAR a RAR file?
A: After you have WinRAR installed, just right-click the file and choose "extract here". This will give you all the folders/files inside the RAR file. You can now delete the RAR file as it is no longer needed.
Q: How do I unRAR multiple RAR files?
A: If you download RAR-parts, you will need to make sure ALL parts are in the SAME folder on your computer. Then right-click part 1 and choose "extract here" the same way you would a normal RAR file. Once WinRAR extracts the contents of the first part, it automatically moves to the next, so once it is done, you have the entire contents of ALL the RAR part files. There is no need to extract part 2 or part 3 (etc.), doing so will only repeat the same process and continually give you the same files. The format you will see RAR parts in is: "filename".part1.rar, "filename".part2.rar, etc.
Q: Do ZIP files have parts too?
A: Yes, but we rarely/never use them. If you see them they are in this format: "filename".zip, "filename".z01, "filename".z02 etc. WinRAR can handle ZIP files like this as well.
Q: What the hell is a .001 file?
A: A .001 file is similar to multi-part RAR files, except they are uncompressed, cannot be password-protected and WinRAR can't handle them. For these files you need the program HJ-Split.
Q: How do I use HJ-Split to join .001 files?
A: Make sure HJ-Split is in the same folder as ALL the .001, .002, .003 files you have and click 'join', then open the .001 file and HJ-split will merge all the parts into the original file. After it's done you can delete the .00X files because you no longer need them.
Q: What is a 7z or 7zip file?
A: 7z/7zip is a native format from the program, 7-Zip, which is a freeware alternative to WinRAR. WinRAR can handle these files, and they are similar to RAR files.
Q: What is an ACE file?
A: Similar to ZIP/RAR, WinRAR supports it.
Q: What is a UHA file?
A: UHA is a more proprietory format similar to RAR, ZIP, 7z, but you will need the program WinUHA to use these. They are rarely used.
Q: What is an ISO file?
A: ISO files are image files, meaning an exact image of a CD or DVD, which can be opened and burned to CD/DVD with a program like UltraISO or Nero. You can also use a virtual drive to run these files as if they were real CDs/DVDs, off of your hard disk, without the need to burn discs. UltraISO comes with a virtual drive option in the installer, which is the one I use (if you have Nero installed you probably have Nero Image Drive installed already, that is just as useful). Other tools for this are DaemonTools or Alcohol, but it's just personal preference which tool you use for this.
Q: I have a BIN and CUE file, what do I do?
A: These are far less common than ISO files, but work pretty much the same way. The BIN file is the data of the CD/DVD image and the CUE file is what you load to burn the image. Nero and UltraISO can handle these files.
Q: What is a serial?
A: A serial is simply a string of numbers or letters (or both) that are used to register software, thereby unlocking the full version.
Using them requires only a simple copy and paste (or look and type) when requested.
Q: What is a keygen?
A: A keygen is a serial generator, which can be used to make serial codes that will work for the program you are trying to register. Some are more complicated than others, so always read the instructions.
Q: What is a patch or crack?
A: A patch or crack can be anything from a small program that modifies a few application files, to actual modified program files that activate the full version.
In most cases simply copy-pasting (and overwriting) the files into the appropriate folders (check the readme for the correct folders and instructions) is enough. However some cracks/patches do require more, so always read the instructions before attempting to patch/crack software.
Q: What is a TORRENT file?
A: Torrent files are used by a (Bit-)Torrent client to connect to a bit-torrent tracker (like ThePirateBay) which then tells your torrent client who else has the file and connects you to them so you can download. The majority of the downloads on ePirate are not torrents, but for larger files we often use them or have them as an option.
Q: How do I get started with bit-torrent?
A: I would recommend downloading uTorrent, my personal favorite torrent client. In order to use this, many will have to configure their port-forwarding on their routers or modems. Most DSL customers will have to regardless of whether they have a router or not. PortForward.com offers great tutorials on how to do this for virtually all models of routers and many models of modems. If you live in the United States I also strongly recommend you use PeerGuardian 2 in conjuction with bit-torrent.
Q: Your keygen/patch has a trojan virus/worm!!
A: 99.99% of the time this is just your antivirus feeding you BS. The reason why this is picked up is either because of how these things work (injecting code into program files/putting info in registry to license the app) or because antivirus companies have their software pirated too. It's probably more the first, but a combination of the two.
If you really feel strongly about your case though, you are free to submit your file to Virustotal and see if your file is indeed clean or not.
Q: Is Warez illegal?
A: Lots of people like to say it is, but the truth is it is completely legal in many countries, so check your local laws if you care.
Q: Is ePirate an illegal website?
A: Absolutely not. This website hosts no files, we only link to them.
Q: Is there any danger in downloading from ePirate if my nation sees Warez as illegal?
A: There is no danger in downloading from any of the links we supply, because, unlike P2P networks, your are downloading from a private server, so no one can spy on you the way they do on P2P. However, if you download from any torrents we link to on here you will be on a public network, and therefore can potentially get in trouble. The chances are small, but it's possible. This is why I recommend whenever you are downloading or seeding (uploading) a torrent, you should use PeerGuardian 2, to reduce the odds of any consequences.
Q: I got a notice that my software is illegal or pirated?
A: When a software key is found to be pirated, most often it just expires, but some companies enjoy scaring warez newbies and making threatening notices calling it "illegal" or "pirated". Don't worry, there won't be any legal concerns for you, it just means your software's serial or patch was killed. Let us know and we will try to find a new version or find a solution.
Q: Is digital piracy theft?
A: If you ask most profit-seeking software vendors/programmers the answer will clearly be yes. But the truth is it is not. The definition of theft is to take and deprive one of their property. Digital "piracy" only copies, makes a duplicate of, the original, so no property is stolen, as the "owner" has not had his property taken and has not been deprived of it.
Q: Should I buy software?
A: If you have the money to buy a software application on this site, DO IT. You are helping us all out by keeping the software companies in business. Additionally, we have a lot of freeware available on ePirate as well, if you like that, consider making a donation to the creators.
Q: Why isn't ePirate listed on any Warez Indexing sites like Phaze/Katz?
A: We choose not to be. It's hard to respect people who are in it 100% for profit like these guys, especially when they do nothing at all to earn all the advertising revenue they gain. So this site will never link to them or be affiliated with them in any way.
Q: Why doesn't ePirate have music/ebooks/audiobooks/ROMs?
A: Although members may trade this in our forums, we don't bother with this on the main site because we simply do not have a large enough staff, nor do we want to take on something that will cause us to spend even more time than we do now.
Q: Why does ePirate have a non-Porn policy?
A: Because we want to keep this site clean and nice to use for all, which includes children. Most parents wouldn't allow their kids to use this site if we had porn everywhere and why should they be deprived of the wonderful world of warez?
Q: How is ePirate funded?
A: By our donators! 2009 has been the first year we have not yet taken a financial loss, thank you for your support!
Q: Where is ePirate hosted?
A: Sweden.
Q: How do I become an official uploader?
A: Best way to do this is to impress us somehow. Add unique downloads, add stuff with good instructions, if the people downloading comment on your uploads that they are good and such this helps, submit content several times per week, be available for when someone asks a question on your upload etc. All of our staff members (outside of admins) have been handpicked by admins because we deemed them to have qualities we want in our staff. Asking us to become staff won't help.
Q: I have a Warez site and want to trade links!
A: Send us an email and I will take a look-over and if it's up to our standards we will gladly trade.
Q: What are your standards?
A: No blatant porn ads, no porn-only sites, no ridiculous popups/javascripts/forced voting etc., warez content or similar content, site updated/maintained regularly. It helps you out a lot if you get a recommendation from one of our already trusted affiliates (see the links area for them).
Q: I have a non-Warez site, can we still trade links?
A: Maybe, send me the link and we will check it out and let you know.
Q: You didn't answer MY question!
A: Then email me and I will answer--> epiratez@gmail.com
